When Should I start contacting companies about a job?

I am a senior on the west coast looking to relocate to Austin Texas this July when I graduate... I hope to get a job as a commercial real estate broker and have interned in the industry for almost a year.. when should I start contacting companies out there about a job? I have contacted one and have had no response..should I wait until April or May when I am closer to graduating?

1. I suggest beginning your job search now. One of the best ways to land a good job is through networking and personally connecting with people in the field you're interested in pursuing. Since you've interned in the industry, start with the contacts you already know. Let them know you're planning to move later this year and ask for help connecting with people who can help you break into a the job market. Also, consider whether you're prepared to pay for your own relocation expenses. Many companies are downsizing and aren't willing to consider or hire out-of-town prospects. Do you know someone in the town you'd like to live? Perhaps you can use their local address on your resume so you're not overlooked. Hope this helps and good luck!
2. You should start now. But not by sending resumes and cover letters to employers. Contact the employers you want to work for, find out who you would be working for (the hiring manager), have a conversation with him/her and explain the situation. Get them interested in you by what you've accomplished so far THEN send the resume directly to them (because they'll ask you to if you do this right). Lay the ground work now and you'll have a much smoother transition this summer.
